Fashion in this new generation is far different from fashion that was known in Ancient Rome. In this post, let’s go back to the days before we welcome the new trends we know today – Ancient Roman clothing.
Clothing among men in Ancient Rome
In Ancient Rome, regular men used to wear a knee-length tunic. Tunic comes with two different styles which are sleeveless or short sleeved. They wore over a cloak which looks like a shawl wrapped around their body. While the important Romans dress in toga, a long robe.
Clothing among women in Ancient Rome
Ancient Roman regular women also wore a tunic but is way longer than the men’s wear. It was often ankle-length. They also have some clothing to worn over there tunic which is called a stola. Stola is a full length from neck to ankle. Rich women wore the same but was made with expensive cotton or silk. They also have jewelry around them and wore make-up with their strong scented perfumes and classy hairstyles. And they even have their own slaves to dress them.
Clothing among Children in Ancient Rome
Of course, we have the children. Boys wore a tunic below the knee, if it is cold. And the rich boys wore toga with purple borders. They wore a bulla around their neck that was given when they were few days old. Girls wore a tunic with a woolen belt. They all have this special charm necklace called bulla which given to them when they were few days old.
Note that “ Toga “ can only be worn by the Roman citizens. They wore it whenever they wanted to look smart, much like suit and tie nowadays. Although, Toga are not just worn by anyone. Romans are sensitive when it comes to Toga colors. Since colors were used to emblem occasions or their ranks. There really is a need to be careful when it comes to choosing Toga color and layout to avoid misinterpretations.
Today, whenever people hear about Rome, and talks about their fashion, some people would think that they’re just wearing some clothes made up of wool. A fashion created with tunic, toga, stola, cloaks and underclothes. But it’s not. Rome also enriched their fashion as everybody else did. As a matter of fact, they also have one of the famous fashion designers in the world.
